The valley was first discovered accidentally by a group of mountaineers in 1931 who were returning from an expedition to Mount Kamet. Frank Smythe, Eric Shipton and RL Holdsworth were a part of this team. In 1980, Valley of Flowers was declared a national park and in 2000, Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve added it as the second core zone. It now comes under UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere (MAB) programme.There are about 500 varieties of flowers that are found here and some of them even have medicinal properties.The valley itself is about 2km wide and 8 km long and the best time to visit is between July to mid of September.

Itinerary

Day 1Trekkers will be picked from Rishikesh bus station at 6:00am and travel to Joshimath by road which takes approx. 10 hours - Arrival at Joshimath around 5 p.m. - Over night stay at Guest house

Day 2On this day, First drive from Joshimath to Govindghat for about 40mins. and then to Pulna. Then, there will be 9 kms of trekking in approx. 4 hours time from Pulna (6,800 feet) to Ghangharia (9,800 feet) - Gradual ascent on a stone-paved path, all the way along the river - Packed lunch will be given - Overnight stay in Guest house

Day 3On this day there will be 4 kms of trekking each way in approx. 7 hours time from Ghangharia (9,800 feet) to Valley of Flower (11,500 feet) and back to Ghangaria - The Valley is 6-7 km long, ends with a glacier -Mixed incline till the valley followed by level walk on grassland - Packed lunch will be given - Overnight stay in guest house

Day 4On this day there will be 5.5 kms of trekking each way in approx. 7 hours time from Ghangharia (9,800 feet) to Hemkund Sahib (14,100 feet) and back to Ghangaria - Gradual and steep mixed ascent on a stair welled stone-paved path -Hot lunch at Gurduwara langar - Brahma Kamal, Himalayan blue poppy can be seen on the way to Hemkund Sahib - Overnight stay in guest house

Day 5On this day there will be approx. 5-6 hours of Trekking from Ghangaria to Govindghat - Drive to Joshimath for 20 mins - Lunch on the way (packed lunch) - Overnight stay in guest house

Day 6On last day travel back from Joshimath to Rishikesh, a 210 km drive, which takes approx. 10 hours - drop to Railway station for return journey

Day 7Buffer day will be used if unable to summit due to of any unforeseen circumstances - If buffer day is not used in the Expedition then it can be used to explore Rishikesh/Haridwar/ Mussoorie
